An Unlikely Story

Bookshop

Plainville, MA

“On the site of the historic Falk's Market, the store has created a cornerstone in downtown Plainville with an indie bookstore, a café and an event space.” An Unlikely Story has been a destination bookstore. Besides books, they have a cafe with many treats or even go to place for lunch. The top floor is used for events such as book signing, book clubs, support groups and so much more.

Stillwater Bookstore

 Bookshop

West Warwick, RI

Originally in Pawtucket, RI, this shop moved recently. A cat welcomes customers to the well organized store. It offers new and used books at reasonable prices. Some books are as low as $.99. Plenty of parking is available.

East Greenwich Public Library

East Greenwich, RI

One hundred and ten years ago a man named Daniel Albert Pierce decided to have the current library built. The children’s room is dedicated to his daughter who died at a young age. As you look at the pictures notice the details. I find newer libraries don’t have the same characteristics as ones this old. There has been an addition built extending the space available. Love the statue and the murals in the lower level.

Thrift/Consignment/Antique stores

How many people buy their books at these types of stores? Please comment.

There are some stores with many shelves of books. I’ve come across a few with some good selections. New Bedford Antiques at the Cove, MA has so many books, a room full, but I have yet to find anything that I am interested in buying. Etcetera Shoppe, in Meredith NH, has a smaller selection but more up to date authors. Most readers who stop by will find something.

Midnight Library

 Book Review

By Matt Haig
4.5/5*

Ever have regrets? What would happen if you took the other road? Every midnight the main character goes back to the library and picks a different book. Each has a different path that she could have taken. Although I am not interested in science fiction, this theme was right up my alley. I read another book by the same author, Humans. Earth from an alien’s perspective. It was NOT my cup of tea.

Sarah’s Key

Book Review

By Tatiana de Rosney
4.5/5*

Great story making the reader see the war through a French girl’s eyes. I enjoy reading a book that is both entertaining and informative. Sarah’s “key”  is to a cabinet in her apartment that she locks to hide her brother when her and her family are taken away.

Charter Books

 Bookshop

Broadway, Newport, RI

Very nice, relatively new bookstore in Newport.  It opened just under 4 years ago. Two floors of books with great recommendations throughout the store. Cute nooks for children to stop and read. Notice the quotes on the walls. https://charterbookstore.com/

What is the “Friends of the Library “

This is a group of individuals who see how important the library is to their community. Typically they meet monthly to discuss what they can do to help provide more services. There are dues collected as well as fundraisers. The most common fundraiser is the book sale. There are many customers who leave a sale with a bag of books and a smile. The group supports programs for children such as story time, crafts and snow cones. Teens have digital workshops, STEM programs and crafts. Adults are offered lectures, movies, museum passes and so much more.

Independent Bookstores

For years I have been trying to promote independent bookstores on my Facebook feed. One year I had a contest with a couple of friends to see who could visit and make a purchase from the most stores. One of my favorite stores did not make it. Bayswater Books in Center Harbor, NH was a two floor building selling new and used books. It also sold sundries such as cards, napkins and bookends. The owner decided to retire and no one stepped up to purchase it. Although I have considered owning a bookstore for years, the timing wasn’t right.

The Reading List

 Book Review

Sara Nisha Adam’s
4.2/5*

Setting: library
A found mysterious list of books was left in a book. The two main characters start to read them and discuss each. A bond is created between them and a character’s granddaughter. A small theme which I would have liked to be larger was .. how to save a library.

I’ve only read two. Does anyone recommend reading any of the others?
To Kill a Mockingbird
Rebecca
The Kite Runner 👍🏻
The Life of Pi👍🏻
 Little Women
Pride & Prejudice
Beloved
A Suitable Boy

Bookshop on the Corner

Book Review

Jenny Colgan
4.3/5*

This librarian is good at her job. She matches people with the best books until she must leave her job. “Bookshop” was a little misleading. She creates a bookmobile from an old van. She shows her entrepreneurial spirit by going out on her own. Her adventures in a Scottish village were fun to read.

Liane Moriarty

 Author Review

I just finished Apple Never Falls. As I was thinking of my review I started thinking about other books by her. In my opinion this is an author that writes books that are so unpredictable. This is an excellent trait in a book. Compare them to the Alex Cross series by James Patterson. His character has been shot in so many books. You know he will pull through every single time. He is the lead character. There are many other authors that you know the ending too early.

Apple is about a mom and wife that disappeared. You’re left wondering throughout …what happened? How does the guest fit in with the mystery?

Memoirs of Celebrities

I feel like I can learn something from reading nonfiction. Do memoirs count? I’m thinking some do but some are just pure entertainment. Rig...
