The Local BOOKie

 Bookstore

N. Conway, NH

“In September 1998, we opened the doors. We had 2,500 books. I thought we were the cat’s meow! Twenty years later, we have 50,000”. It is small but there are so many bookshelves that I can believe they have that many books. The owner was hoping to start a bookstore from when she was young. She was an avid reader since her first memory. She is a very personable woman who only created her bookstore dream when she retired. No computers or website necessary. Look for the place at 295 West Main. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cOjVyMuWfo

The Wedding

 Book Review

5*/5

If you liked The Notebook, this was so much better. I believe it was Sparks best. I’m surprised they didn’t adapt it into a movie. They have done many of his other books.

Yes, it is a love story but it has twists and turns that I loved!

Quiet

 Book Review

Susan Cain
3.9*/5

Which is better: introvert or extrovert? For a time extroverts were the only type sought out to hire in business. A goal for many people was to seem like an extrovert. Some people still feel they make the best employees. In school the extrovert gets the most attention. Parents worry if their child is an introvert.

The book explains the differences and how each type has its own strengths and weaknesses. How a company’s office arrangement can affect the work environment. In school the pressure to have group work is not the best to educate all. To be shy and to be an introvert are not the same.

This book is an interesting read if you want to learn and understand your employees, students and even your partner.

Book versus Movie

Most people will agree the book is much better than the movie. I think the best example is My Sister’s Keeper. One of my 5*/5 books. Unique story so you can’t predict the ending. Who has the rights to decide on your health, you or your mom? It deals with a serious conflict between law and family making it a difficult decision.

Now the movie dealt with cancer and sisters. That is about the only similarity to the book. I would give the movie, at most, a 3*/5. There is an insane twist in the book that makes the book amazing. Is it in the movie? No?

Blueberries and Books

Gafney Library, Wakefield, NH

Some libraries have added a bake sale to their book sales. They often find the goodies bring in close to the same amount of money as the books for their fundraising. Who can pass up on the fruit of the season this August? I arrived during a celebration of 100 years. They were having a huge raffle of art in the form of quilts, paintings, bags and so much more. An excellent read about the history of this and libraries in general can be found in the site I posted below.

Enough Already

Book Review

Valerie Bertinelle

4*/5

I feel like I have grown up watching Valerie grow up. Her basic theme is why has she always had a goal of losing 10 pounds. If only… I would be happy, I would feel better, I would have a better life… Once she stopped weighing herself EVERYDAY, a weight was lifted off her shoulders ( pun intended). She also discusses her son, Covid, cooking and a full chapter regarding her former husband, Eddie Van Halen. He suffered through cancer for years. She kept in touch with him throughout his battle. ❤️

Laconia Library

 Laconia, NH

A large town needs a large library. In 1903 the current building was dedicated to Napoleon Gale. This man was a banker who left a considerable amount of money to have a public library built. Many libraries have started as private collections that one would need to be a paid member to borrow books. The early 1900’s saw the change to offering all people the chance to browse, borrow and read from town book collections.
